When a refrigerator stops cooling, the first thing to notice is whether it is running at all. A unit that is silent and dark points to power or a control problem. A unit that is running but warm points inside, to the defrost system, the airflow, or the sealed refrigeration system. On built-in and column units the diagnosis is more involved than on a basic refrigerator, because two sealed systems and a defrost microprocessor are in play.
Most Common Causes
- Defrost fault: a failed defrost heater, sensor or timer lets frost build on the evaporator until airflow is choked and the box warms.
- Evaporator fan failure: without the fan moving cold air, the compartment warms even though the system is making cold.
- Dirty condenser: a clogged condenser cannot shed heat, which is worse at altitude and can push a system into a warm state.
- Sealed-system fault: a refrigerant leak or a failing compressor leaves the whole unit unable to cool.
- Control fault: a bad thermistor or control board can misread temperature and stop calling for cooling.
Notes by Brand
The same symptom often traces to a different root cause depending on the brand:
- Sub-Zero: built-ins and columns use dual sealed systems and a defrost control that must be tested in sequence; a warm fresh-food side with a cold freezer is frequently defrost or airflow, not the compressor.
- Wolf and Viking: their refrigeration is diagnosed by symptom rather than numeric codes, so airflow, defrost and the sealed system are checked directly.
- Thermador, Bosch and Liebherr: these often display a fault or temperature alarm that narrows the cause; Liebherr shows E-codes and temperature alarms we confirm with a meter.
- Miele and Monogram: a control or sensor fault can stop a call for cooling, and the display usually flags it.
| What You See | Likely Cause | What the Fix Involves |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh food warm, freezer cold | Defrost or airflow fault | Test the defrost circuit, restore airflow |
| Whole unit warm, running | Sealed-system leak or compressor | Leak-test and repair the sealed system |
| Runs constantly, slightly warm | Dirty condenser or weak fan | Clean the condenser, replace the fan |
| Silent and dark | Power or control fault | Check power, test the control board |
Safe Checks Before You Book
Confirm the unit has power and the breaker is set, make sure interior vents are not blocked by food, and check that the condenser area is not packed with dust. If the box is warming with food inside, move perishables to a working unit while you arrange service.
Refrigerator Warming Up?
Book a diagnosis and we will trace the cooling fault to its source. Diagnostic and travel fees, if applicable, are confirmed before the appointment and before repair approval.
